China Sewing Sector Expo-Impo Performance in the First 2 Months

As overseas markets have a rising demand for restocking at the beginning of 2022, China's sewing machinery sector in January has fulfilled an export value of 345mn USD, setting a monthly export record for another time, while interrupted by the Spring Festival holidays and sporadic outburst of pandemic cases, the sector's export in February has seen a noticeable shrinkage and a minor year-on-year dip. In general, China's sewing machinery sector has maintained last year's growth momentum in the first two months this year though with a slower rate.

Export in summary and by product:

According to data released by the Customs, China has in total exported sewing machineries worth of 535mn USD in January and February, growing 15.15% compared with the same period the year before. Specifically, it has exported industrial sewing machine of 850 thousand sets worth of 289mn USD; its export volume has grown 18.33% on a year-on-year basis, and its export value 37.30%.

China has exported sewing machineries worth of 345mn USD in January, increasing 26.60% compared with the year before, and growing 13.14% compared with the previous month, sending the monthly export to a record high once again. In detail, the sector exported industrial sewing machine of 540 thousand sets worth of 184mn USD; its export volume and export value grow 24.63% and 47.71% respectively compared with the year before, and grow 21.90% and 18.36% respectively compared with the month before. The monthly export value of industrial sewing machine has reached the highest level in recent years.

In February, the sector's export value has declined by 1.02% compared with the same period the year before or by 44.66% compared with the previous month to 191mn USD, a substantial drop. It exported industrial sewing machine of 310 thousand sets worth of 105mn USD; its export volume and value have grown 8.74% and 22.21% respectively on a year-on-year basis, but dropped 42.68% and 42.97% compared with the previous month.

Export to different markets

In the first two months of 2022, China has exported sewing machineries to BRI countries worth of 356mn USD, increasing 26.61% on a year-on-year basis, and constituting 66.51% of the sector's aggregate export, which is 6.02% higher than the same period the year before. Regionally, it has exported such products worth of 145mn USD to ASEAN countries, 46.57% higher than the year before; 118mn USD to south Asia, increasing 18.88% on a YoY basis; 45mn USD to Middle East, growing 35.73% on a YoY basis; 31mn USD to EU, falling 15.53% compared with the year before; 29mn USD to east Asia, 13.76% lower than the year before; 16mn USD to central Asia, soaring 54.17% on a YoY basis.

By country, India, Vietnam and the United States are the top three export destinations of China's sewing machineries in the first two months of 2022. Moreover, India, surpassing Vietnam, has once again become China's largest export market; in the past two months, China has exported 60.36mn USD worth of sewing equipment to India, increasing 16.07% compared with the year before, and contributing 11.28% to the sector's gross export; it has exported 58.31mn USD worth of such equipment to Vietnam, growing 28.94% on a year-on-year basis, and making up 10.90% of the sector's aggregate export; and 28.54mn USD to the United States, increasing 0.57% on a YoY basis, and constituting 5.33% of the total export. Besides, the sewing sector has also seen its export to the following countries skyrocket compared with the year before: Pakistan, Bangladesh, Singapore, Indonesia and Cambodia.

In February, the sector exported 20.90mn USD worth of sewing equipment to India, dropping 10.17% on a YoY basis, and sinking 47.02% compared with the previous month. Nevertheless, export to countries like Vietnam, Bangladesh, Singapore, Turkey, Cambodia has grown compared with the year before, that to UAE, Malaysia, Mexico and others even doubled.

Import briefing:

According to the latest data made available by the Customs, China has imported sewing machineries worth of 161mn USD in the first two months of 2022, falling 2.01% on a year-on-year basis. Specifically, it has imported industrial sewing machine of 6,639 sets worth of 16.60mn USD, of which the import volume and value have dropped 9.38% and 0.95% respectively; 10,800 sets of household sewing machines (increasing 10.94%), worth of 1.14mn USD (growing 23.66%); 1,306 sets of equipment used before or after the sewing process (80.67% lower), worth of 131mn USD (deceasing 0.77%).

In January, China has imported sewing machineries worth of 112mn USD, increasing 29.43% compared with the year before, and soaring 48.76% compared with the previous month, which also sets an import record. It imported industrial sewing machines of 3,627 sets, worth of 10.18mn USD; its import volume dropped 21.46% compared with the year before, and dropped 7.00% compared with the previous month; its import value 4.71% lower than the same period the year before, but 24.23% higher than that of the previous month.

In February, China has imported sewing machineries worth of 49.03mn USD, falling 36.98% on a YoY basis, and tanking 56.21% compared with the month before. The import volume of industrial sewing machine is 3,012 sets, 11.23% higher compared with the year before but 16.96% lower compared with the previous month; its import value is 6.42mn USD, growing 5.66% on a YoY basis but falling 36.96% compared with the previous month.
